Spring displays

Spring is a mixture of fresh greens and color from bulbs and herbaceous plantings that awaken from winters rest.In a matter of weeks these displays come and go and are followed by others to make the garden that more interesting. Here Siberian Iris and purple Hesperis intermingle with other and dominate the meadows.

Summer Lilliums, Monarda and Alliums

The herbaceous displays reach their peak in December and the color and aromatic smells carry through the garden. The garden is buzzing literally with bees and butterflies looking for nectar where Lilliums,Salvias,Monarda, Agastache and Dahlias to mention a few take center stage.

Summer riot.

The meadow displays various flower forms, color and heights in January. With Veronicastrum, Echinacea, Monarda, and Dahlias its a calming color scheme and a delight to see.

Autumn tones.

There's plenty of Autumn interest in this garden. The Crab apples, Maples, and Pears display changing colors in their leaves to reds, oranges and yellows. Berries hang on Viburnums and Callicarpa in red and purple. The dwarf conifers of Picea and Abies are very structural and give green backing to herbaceous plantings that stands tall with displays of Asters fluffy seed heads, russet tones in Sedums and Miscanthus, Veronicastrums tall spikes, Monarda with their tight seed heads and this carries the display through to winter. The small bird life particularly Blue wrens are very noticeable as they feed on seeds and berries and any bugs

A winter wonderland

It truly is a sight to see snow falling in the valley of Hartley. This garden looks beautiful in the snow. The garden structure truley shows and the herbaceous meadows are designed and held back from cutting down for this one off natural wonder of snow fall. The picture shows a Cornus (dogwood) tracery with remnants of Miscanthus and Eupatorium seedheads holding the powder snow.

Visitor Comments

I visited Wild Meadows yesterday after an absence of a few years and I was blown away how this garden has evolved in such a short time. Colour, form and texture everywhere, such a delight.

Today I had the pleasure of attending Stephen's workshop on propagating. I have found his workshops to be an impressive combination of easy to understand theory and hands on experience. His generosity with all his knowledge makes for an inspirational as well as practical time spent in his stunning garden. Not to be missed! Claudia

The magnitude and beauty of this garden just takes your breath away. What Stephen has done in five years and continuing to do is inspirational . We were unbelievably lucky to be the only people visiting and Stephen took the time to personally walk us around the entire property. ... Stunning.
