In 1910 the property was bought by Benjamin Nathan who, like Sargood, was very interested in the garden, especially orchids they won numerous awards. Nathan also introduced more native plants into the garden and built a large conservatory and 14 glasshouses. At one time he employed 14-17 gardeners.
The house's original owner Frederick Sargood was a keen gardener and particularly interested in orchids and ferns. His initial designs were extended including a new, enlarged fernery and made less formal over the years.
The Drawing Room pictured was originally Frederick Sargood's study and it underwent many changes over the years including the 'Hollywood Style' renovations in 1938-39, which is what you see today. It's just one of the many magnificent rooms not to be missed in the house including the ornate Master Bedroom, the Conservatory, the glamorous Dining room and Ballroom.
Please note tours inside the mansion are not available during an exhibition.
